Hey guys, WhatsUp 🤜🤛 today we are gonna discuss the term “RESONANCE” and this article might go too long due to its various applications and also because of its importance and interesting facts (like breaking of a glass by our vocal sound🙉).
The word resonance comes from Latin and means to “resound” – to sound out together with a loud sound.
Guys, before we jump into the pool of resonance, I just wanna tell you about my reactions when I was in my SYJC year 😁. Guys it was the year 2012 where the world was curious about the news so-called “😱END OF THE WORLD😱“ and I was like wondering about the concept of Resonance because that was the year where I Understood the resonance not so much😁 but yes, I got some ideas of vibrating the things with the help of sound.
Then after some years again this COOL concept of RESONANCE enters into my life and now by hook crook by a crook 😝. I have to understand this topic and then I started reading books like haliday rescnik fundamental of physics and H.C Verma and then I got some more details and then I was like thinking about, Why the glasses and my households are like dancing🤣😂 (Vibrating) during the dandiya season. (Because of resonance)
This is the time when I was like super excited and one thing I’m cleared about resonance that this is the energy that can vibrate some objects at a greater level so that the objects were not only DANCING but they can be DESTROYED.
Guys this is not the end of my experience about resonance. Now, I got a project of learning and sharing of this concept to the school students by a hands-on activity and then I learned more about the resonance and demonstrated to the school 🎓 students with the help of this toy:

Yes, guys this a head massager and with the help of this we have boleto me and my team explained the term RESONANCE and the school students enjoyed learning through this massager 😉.
Now, I just wanted to define you the term resonance as per book that is :
“The increase in the amplitude of oscillation of an electric or mechanical system exposed to a periodic force whose frequency is equal or very close to the natural frequency of the system “
Guys, I know this definition is like 🤔😵 for you But don’t worry I will try to get you to understand this very easily😉.
So let’s now swim into the pool of resonance to understand it better. If you can see the image of head massager above, there are lots of stands on it and for better understanding, I have just marked them with some coloured hearts I.e the stands with red hearted are of the same length and so on for black and blue ones.
So Guys now I just wanna ask you that what will happen if you vibrate the red ❤ one with some force?
⏩ All stands (❤, 💙, 🖤) will vibrate.
⏩ The only smaller stand 💙 will vibrate.
⏩ Only the red ❤ one will vibrate.
📢 guys, let your answer be with you, you will get the answer just keep reading🤓.
So, this same activity we have demonstrated to many students in 2018-19 in Nashik city and the same questions we have asked them and the maximum answer was for an only red ❤ one and finally, we have demonstrated and yes, 😃 the answer is your red one 😍.
This is the beauty of resonance that when you vibrate red one then only red one will vibrate more effectively and if you vibrate blue one then only blue one will vibrate maximum frequency and so on.
Let it clear with some real-life example, so if you recall some festival like dandiya or any festival in which DJ’s {🎶🔊} are played, the windows were like shaking or you can say windows are dancing on the beat 💃and why not the other things are vibrating so, This is one of the best real-life examples of resonance that you have already experienced😁.
Now, what
If I would say you that I can collapse the bridge with the help of blowing air only 😳, what would your reaction? but the reality is we can do such things with the help of resonance.
Click this #sciencepandit to see the video of how a bridge collapsed because of resonance.
CONCLUSION➡
With the help of the resonance effect, I can make a specific object to dance😁(vibrate). Guys, I think this is one of the great magic of resonance effect and it has many MERITS and DEMERITS in our daily life. Guys, I think this is one of the great magic of resonance effect and it has many MERITS and DEMERITS in our daily life.
Examples➡
- Melody sound produced in GUITAR
- all sound instruments 📯🎷🎻🎺🎸
- Falling of building during EARTHQUAKE
- Our sound drum in ear 👂
- breaking of glass using opera song
- And many more…
So what IS the resonance?
Guys, we are just a little away from the understanding of resonance. See the attached two images to get it to understand😃

- So in the 1st fig, the ball is increasing its displacement when a periodic force is applied over it by me i.e resonance occurs.
- While in 2nd fig, the displacement is decreasing when I applied non-periodic force on the ball.
So the 1st fig is nothing but the resonance of ball i.e its displacement is getting more and more when applied with the periodic force and this is why the bridge was collapsed due to periodic force applied by ME😁 not by me it was from the avalanche of air ( boleto Hawa ka tufaan)
What is Periodic force?
See, the ball is doing back and forth motion. So when you applied a forward force to the forth motion of ball, it’s displacement will increases rapidly.
Hence, periodic force increases the motion
CONCLUSION:
⚙ The resonance occurs due to periodic force applied over an object continuously ⚙
⚙You can make objects to vibrate by applying suitable natural frequency to the object ⚙
Guys,
Let’s understand an interesting fact about the sound instruments😃. So, we have the image below of tuning forks both having the same frequency of 450Hz from which one is in hand and another one is mounted on a box.
so, the question is if you tune both with the forks with the same force then which one will produce LOUD SOUND🤔?

Now, let’s move on to get this answer buddy, so the sound which is produced from string objects like guitar, violin, etc produces pressure waves into the atmosphere.

(compression and rarefaction of sound waves)
and the amplitude of this sound produced is proportional to the area of the instrument (should be in solid for better experience ) to which the string or fork is attached. Like here in 2nd figure, a tuning fork is attached to a larger area ( solid-box).
so, in the above diagram, the tuning fork in the 1st figure has no any solid surface-attached and hence it has an area of itself only while in the 2nd figure the tuning fork is attached to a larger area.
So, now we have an idea that in the 2nd figure the area is larger (area of BOX) as compared to 1st one (has no BOX) and hence this larger area vibrates along with tuning fork hence produces a sound of larger amplitude.
Hence like in guitar 🎸 the strings are attached to a larger solid and hollow structure to produce loud sound and same in the violins and the pionos

Guys, now I have an organ pipe ( BASURI😃) which are of different lengths as shown in the figure below. This is called as a PAN PIPE. Now can you tell me which one produces high-frequency note (sound) or you can say more shrill sound? (THE 1st ONE or THE LAST ONE)

Note: The female has high-pitched voice i.e high frequency while the male has low pitched voice i.e low frequency.
So if you observe carefully below in the formula, you will find an inverse relation between FREQUENCY and the LENGTH of an organ pipe:

f = frequency. L= length of an organ pipe
So conclusion is:
- Shorter the length of an organ pipe, greater will be the frequency (like a female voice)
- larger the length of an organ pipe, shorter will be the frequency (like a male voice)
( In Hindi: agar basuri choti Hui to bhot tikhi ya patli aawaz aayegi boleto high frequency and agar basuri badi hui to bhara hua aawaz ayega)
Now, I think most of you have seen this image below in high schools or in science fair projects

Can you imagine we can see the sound patterns of sound note by using an arrangement as shown in fig. Like:
- Sand or salt
- A Plate fixed to the soundbox
- Sound source
In the above figure, a man is demonstrating the different patterns of sound notes by playing the piano.
Now the question must arise in your mind that how these patterns are created, what is the science behind it?
So in order to understand this, we have to understand the concept of NODE points and the ANTINODE points of a wave.

In the above figure, there are various nodes and antinodes. The nodes are the point at which the amplitude of particles is minimum or zero I.e it will not oscillate or does not vibrate and the antinodes are the point at which the amplitude of a particle is maximum or vibrates with maximum displacement.
Ok now you have an idea of NODES and ANTINODES, let’s move on to our topic i.e the reason behind the sound pattern.

So, can you tell me now that why sand is not getting off from the plate at some positions? Why not all sands are getting off from the plate?
The reason is NODE😃 I.e no vibration of particles (sand).
So, this plate is vibrating in such a way that it has nodes and antibodies at different positions and these points together form this beautiful pattern and similarly you can make such beautiful patterns of different sounds.
